Treetops

Taupō, Waikato

Treetops is set just 10 minutes from the heart of Taupō, above Acacia Bay in a semi-rural, residential area. Treetops is also known as ‘the tiny house of fantails’—named for the dozens of fantails that flit through the surrounding bush.

Upon arrival, your host, Geoff, will personally welcome you and escort you to the 30m off-grid tiny house on his lakeview property. As part of his manaakitanga (hospitality, care and respect for others), Geoff enjoys spending around 30 minutes introducing guests to the space, sharing the story of the property, and showing you how everything works. Guests who appreciate a warm, personal welcome will feel right at home here. If you prefer a quick, self-check-in style arrival, this may not be the best fit.

Treetops has a kitchen, dining and lounge space that make up the living area. The raised seating area faces east, offering sweeping views across Lake Taupō and out to the Kaimanawa Ranges.

The main bedroom features a queen bed and opens onto the deck—perfect for enjoying the crisp morning air with a hot cuppa.

For an ‘alfresco’ touch, slide open the large glass doors and enjoy the outdoor shower with lake views. Wake to the chorus of fantails, tūī, kererū, and bellbirds.

As part of the off-grid experience, the bathroom includes an eco-friendly composting toilet.

In the evening, soak in the outdoor hot tub and take in the twilight views. As darkness falls, light the outdoor fire (when permitted) and enjoy a campfire classic—s’mores.

Staying here, above the treetops, is a memorable indoor-outdoor experience—a chance to slow down, switch off, and soak up the peace and tranquillity.

EATING AND DRINKING

Treetops is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the multifunction oven/microwave, slow cooker and electric hob provided in your kitchen. Cook pizzas over the outdoor fire (pizza insert supplied) when fire restrictions permit. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

A quick 2-minute drive up Marpara Road (or walk the footpath), brings you to the iconic L'Arte Cafe for a coffee and a bite to eat. In the evening, a 2-minute drive down Mapara Road brings you to The Bay Bar and Brasserie offering a full dining menu plus wood fired pizza selection and a Bar and Tapas card.

The heart of Taupō is a mere 10-minute drive, with plenty of dining options to choose from.

The nearest store for stocking up on some food and supplies is a convenience store, just at the bottom of the road. Supermarkets are 10-minutes away in Taupō.

THINGS TO DO

A stay at Treetops is a break from the world. Relax with the native birds and the peaceful lake views.

If you simply want to kick back at the property, there's an outdoor hot tub, swinging hammock, and a selection of board games to play. The property also has short bush walks and a track down into the gully to discover the glow worm grotto at night. Recommended! It is also possible to walk directly down this gully, then a street, and finally concrete steps to the swimming beach of Acacia.

Treetops is located close to the centre of Taupō. It's easy to pop out for the day to shop and indulge at the variety of restaurants on offer.

You may want to try a few of the local bush walks, including Mt Tuahara (2-3 hour return) and the Huka Falls Track. There are also shorter local walks around Acacia Bay including the 20-minute Whakamoenga Point track at the end of Acacia Bay Road which has great views over the lake.

Mountain biking is available at the W2K Kawakawa Bay or Waihaha Tracks. Tracks within 30 minutes of Treetops include the W2K, Matakana Bay, Huka Falls, and the trails at the Craters of the Moon mountain bike park.

If you're feeling adventurous, try out bungee jumping at AJ Hackett Taupō Bungy and Swing. Afterwards, relax your nerves with a dip at Wairakei Terraces (adults only).

“ Treetops was amazing. We loved every minute. Geoff, the host, made our experience even better with all his little thoughtful touches and amazing knowledge of the area. He left us fresh cake, homemade marmalade and fresh eggs from the chickens. What a kind, thoughtful touch. He’s poured so much love into Treetops and it shows. Not forgetting the amazing view of the lake you get. We would recommend this to anyone. Thanks again to Geoff for his amazing hospitality!! ”

“ My husband and I wanted a relaxing getaway after our wedding, and Treetops offered just that. Nestled high in the trees with incredible lake views, being able to shower among all the native birdlife was a treat, and despite the 2am thunderstorm shaking the property, being perched in the window bench seat to watch the skies was utterly breathtaking. Geoff was the kindest host, super friendly and accommodating, and we are already trying to plan our next trip back. ”

Very close to Taupo city centre, so you can easily go out for a nice dinner or if you choose not to, that fire place is great. Will definitely be back. Host is very welcoming and funny! Very nice he got us an engagement gift the day before we left. ”
