The Bearded Poet

Lyttelton Harbour, Canterbury

The Bearded Poet (formerly The Fisherman's Hut) is set on Banks Peninsula, just under an hour from Christchurch City.

The hut is nestled along the rugged, wild coastline of Lyttelton Harbour within a unique volcanic landscape. Positioned only 20 metres from the rocky shoreline, you’re graced with front-row ocean views.

Steeped in history, this hut was originally built during the Depression in the early 1930s. It is still clad in the original flattened kerosene tins.

Now beautifully restored, in keeping with its era, the hut is filled with old worldly charm. ‘The Captain’s Room’ sleeps couples in a queen bed with an oceanside view. The cosy lounging space is thoughtfully embellished to complement the surroundings and history. Winter days call for the glow of the fireplace, a wool rug, and hot tea as you snuggle in with your favourite novel.

The deck overlooks the water, allowing you to relax to the soothing sounds of the waves and watch the boats as they come and go, as do the tides. If you’re lucky, the Hector Dolphins and Orcas may just grace you. The bathroom is in a separate privy, and a lovely outdoor clawfoot bath is nearby for a hot soak overlooking the Ocean after salty swims.

Forage for mussels right outside the hut for a fisherman’s feast, cast a fishing line and test your luck. The private Historic Pack Track hike is a must-do, taking in the breathtaking views of Godley Head and the Southern end of the harbour. You may just find your version of Wonder here.

YOUR HOSTS

Your hosts at The Bearded Poet are Wendy, Alex, and their two young daughters - Indie and Heidi.

Having lived on the property for three years, the family were looking for a change that would ignite their creativity and purpose. Alex, who is a Farmer and Builder by trade, found his perfect match in the historic hut nestled on their land. Meanwhile, Wendy, a Graphic Designer, envisioned a business that incorporated design, marketing, and a purposeful mission.

The Bearded Poet is steeped in history, having been built during the 1930s Depression era. Alex has renovated the hut, turning it into a testament to their journey and a unique charming space for others to enjoy.

TESTIMONIALS

“ Secluded away from the world with breathtaking scenery, a luxurious and character-filled space within driving distance to a lovely coffee shop. We collected mussels and fish straight from the doorstep, which we prepared while watching the sun go down with a glass of wine. Couldn’t want for more from our honeymoon trip. Can’t wait to go back! ”

“ The Bearded Poet feels like it is caught in time in the best possible way. Only 15 minutes from a village with a cute coffee shop, but hidden behind hills in its own untouched bay you don’t have to share with another soul. Just that blue view from every room, the soundtrack of the sea, salty air and a slow rhythm. Wendy and Alex are the warmest hosts - we loved the beautiful note and baking. ”

“ We spent our honeymoon here to unplug from technology and just spend time together. Alex and Wendy are amazing hosts! The area, outside tub, and hut are absolutely amazing even in the colder months!! We definitely recommend spending more than a few days to explore the area and just relax! The wood burning stove is perfect for those cold nights to snuggle and just chat away the evening or play a game of Scrabble! The aesthetic of the hut is relaxing and the views are simply beautiful during the day or on a clear night. We both fully recommend this escape and plan on future visits!!! Thank you Alex and Wendy for restoring and creating a perfect, historic place to get away from it all! ”

“ We feel so isolated from the world we knew, but at the same time so connected to the land we stand on. Rich history, splendid view and warm hospitality from the host Wendy and Alex make this hut better than any luxury hotel we have stayed in. Only if we had more time to read all the books in the room! ”

“ Such a beautiful wee escape to celebrate our anniversary and to get engaged! What a surprise, but such a stunning view. It rained most of our time there, but with the fire roaring we were able to stay cosy and use the outdoor bath, which was just perfect with a view of the harbour. Thank you so much for a beautiful escape. ”
