Eating and Drinking

EATING AND DRINKING

Tether's End Cabin is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the gas Weber BBQ and two-ring electric stovetop provided. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans you'll need.

There are several great food and drink options within easy driving distance of the cabin. In Kaiaua, less than 10 minutes away, you’ll find The Bayview Hotel, named one of New Zealand’s top 50 gastropubs. It offers both indoor and outdoor dining, with a menu featuring locally sourced ingredients and coastal views. The hotel also provides a shuttle service. Kaiaua also has a popular fish and chip shop called Kaiaua Fisheries, where you can enjoy takeaways by the ocean.

Mercer Landing Kitchen and Bar (25 minutes away) is also on the list of New Zealand’s top 50 gastropubs and is known for its craft beer and wholesome meals.

For something special, Bracu Estate Restaurant (20 minutes) is an award-winning dining spot set among peaceful olive groves that offers a fine dining experience.

Coffee lovers can head to Miranda Farm Shop and Café (15 minutes), where you can enjoy a hot drink with views over the Coromandel and pick up local organic beef, seasonal fruit, jams, chutneys, and sauces. Open 8am to 4pm daily.

Further afield, The Public Office in Ngatea (30 minutes) serves seasonal food made with locally sourced ingredients (one of Ngatea's oldest buildings!)

The nearest store for stocking up on food and supplies is at the local gas service station, a 6-minute drive away, which is well-stocked for essentials. For a larger shop, Woolworths in Pokeno is 23 minutes away.

Things to Do

THINGS TO DO

Soak in the twin outdoor clawfoot baths, relax by the campfire, or curl up inside with a board game or a deck of cards. Take a stroll through the surrounding bush and farmland, or cool off in the nearby freshwater swimming hole (you’ll find more details in your welcome guide). Or simply unwind on the deck with a good book and a glass of wine.

There are plenty of places to explore nearby. Walk the unique shell barrier beaches (known as ‘chenier plains’) at the Kaiaua Seabird Coast, or head to the nearby Mangatangi Dam for a scenic walk and a bit of local history, both about 10 minutes away.

Keen cyclists can enjoy the Hunua Traverse Trail (35 minutes) or the Hauraki Rail Trail (10 minutes), both offering beautiful countryside views. The Pūkorokoro Shorebird Centre is also a great spot to watch thousands of migratory birds swirl over the coastal wetlands (10 minutes).

For a day trip, head to Thames (40 minutes) for markets, museums, and award-winning gin, or venture to the Coromandel Peninsula for long sandy beaches and stunning coastal drives. You’ll also find two local golf courses nearby, along with excellent fishing from the Kaiaua boat ramp.

Your Hosts

YOUR HOSTS

Your hosts at Tether’s End Cabin are Phillip and Alison Ratcliffe.

They live on the farm with their grown-up sons, beloved dogs Bella and Biscuit, four horses, and a lively collection of animals.

After living and working overseas, Phillip and Alison returned to New Zealand in 2004 to make this special piece of land their home. With over 50 hectares of protected native bush, they’ve created a peaceful retreat to share with others.

When not farming Angus cattle, Phillip works in the energy industry, while Alison is involved in sports management and the local catchment group. Their passion for nature, community, and simple living shines through in every part of Tether’s End Cabin.

TESTIMONIALS

“ Amazing spot and it was great to be able to take the dog away with us. ”

“ My husband and I stayed here to bring in the new year. What an incredible place. It is such a relaxing spot with an amazing view. Don't get me started on the two bathtubs, that was my highlight for us. Just chilling, soaking in the sun & the views with a glass of wine. All the cutlery, pots & pans were up to standard and weren't old like some other places we have been to. We enjoyed the short farm loop walk as well. It's just an amazing spot and I would highly recommend it to anyone. I miss the place already. ”

“ Another brilliant Canopy Camping stay. Tether's End Cabin is situated on a small hill and has beautiful views. The outdoor tub area has a shower for you to rinse off, which is a great design. And as a bonus, a tasty seafood takeaway is a short drive away. ”

“ We absolutely loved our stay at Tether's End Cabin. Hosts were super welcoming, with clear communication and lots of suggestions on what we could do whilst there. Our dogs absolutely loved the water hole. The walk there was a little bit muddy from the rain so gumboots are definitely recommended, but it was definitely worth it. Thank you so much. ”
