Eating and Drinking

EATING AND DRINKING

Ringa Kaha Cabin is self-catering. Just bring your own food, and cook meals in the fully equipped indoor kitchen or have a go at using the bread/pizza provided in the outdoor kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

If you want a break from cooking at any stage, National Park Village is just a 5-minute drive away and has several restaurants, bars and cafes to choose from.

A Four Square store in National Park is handy for supplies and a larger supermarket is available in Ohakune.

Things to Do

THINGS TO DO

Relax at the cabin in the hot tub...or with Mt Ruapehu and the National Park on your doorstep - there's no shortage of things to do in the area!

Right from the cabin, take the Waterfall Walk (through the gate, first left, down to the valley) or the Mountain View Walk (continue up to the top paddock for panoramic views, then follow the ridge at the head-height fence). Please note this is an active sheep and bull farm (please respect the livestock, keep dogs leashed, and leave gates as you find them.)

It’s just a 15-minute drive from the cabin to Whakapapa Village, and from there, it’s a quick trip up the mountain to the Whakapapa Skifield. In winter, you can hit the slopes, and year-round, you can take the Sky Waka Gondola for incredible views.

For keen walkers, the cabin is perfectly located for the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing one-day trek. A shuttle service from National Park can get you to and from the Crossing.

There are great mountain biking tracks for all levels in the area, including Fishers Track, 42nd Traverse and Old Coach Road. Bikes and shuttles can be organised through My Kiwi Adventure at National Park Village.

The Whanganui River Journey is classified as one of New Zealand’s Great Walks. If you follow Kaitieke Road (where Ringa Kaha Cabin is located) right to the end, you'll get to the launch point for the 3-day Whanganui River Journey. You can hire your own canoe or guided options are available with several different adventure operators.

National Park Village itself has restaurants, bars and activities on offer - Mini Golf and Indoor Rock Climbing - great for rainy day fun!

“ An absolute spectacular view! We had perfect weather for all three days and were able to watch stunning sunsets over Mt Taranaki every night. The wood-fired hot tub provided cooling off during the day and we heated it up more each night to watch the stars. A beautiful cabin. ”

“ We had such a lovely stay at Ringa Kaha Cabin. The cabin is really well set up, with a warm, comfortable bed, a good kitchen for cooking, and a cosy fire for the evenings. It is very private and peaceful, with amazing views right from the windows. The outdoor hot tub was a highlight. Sitting in it while the rain came down was so relaxing. Everything was clean and easy to use, and it felt like the perfect mix of comfort and getting away from it all. We will be back. We’re already planning our next trip. ”
