Pūriri Yurt

Mangawhai, Northland

Pūriri Yurt is located in Mangawhai about 1.5 hours drive from Auckland City.

Pūriri Yurt sits in its own private corner of a beautiful 3-acre lifestyle block. Stunning, 100-year-old mature native trees, a pond and gardens create a restful setting - inducing an instant feeling of well-being. The yurt is named for the magnificent Pūriri tree it nestles next to.

The yurt itself is a serene space, with simple, natural decor complementing the beautiful timber latticework that forms part of its structure. A queen-sized bed holds centre stage, with two armchairs and a small table for indoor dining.

Directly outside the yurt is a small timber building housing a kitchenette, and an outdoor shower and bath area. An outdoor fire place with comfortable Adirondack chairs is the ideal place for star-gazing the incredible night sky.

Kaka and tuis are in abundance here. Moreporks can be heard regularly at night - along with the trickle of water from the pond, like the sound of a babbling brook as you drift off to sleep.

Pūriri Yurt is truly lovely accommodation, on a truly magical property... a place for relaxation and rejuvenation.

YOUR HOSTS

After 33 years John and Marion left the city life, in 2016, to move back to a more rural environment and have never looked back.

They'd raised two children (who are now living overseas) and they were looking for new challenges to fill their day. Their property is a constant work in progress which includes beautiful old established native trees. With natural springs that fill the pond and other areas of the property, it is a haven for birdlife. John and Marion plan to enhance this with wetlands planting on two sites.

Marion is a Wedding Celebrant while John works for the local landscaping supplier.

As keen travellers, camping veterans and current hosts to their other guest accommodation, 'The Shed on Tara', they work hard to ensure guests unplug, reconnect and simply relax on their magical property.

“ My stay at the Puriri Yurt felt like stepping into a storybook. Peaceful, private and breathtaking, yet just a minute from the road. The love was seen and felt in every detail, from the personalised bath salts and jams to the thoughtful lighting and games. The outdoor soaker tub, the tree swing and the little tea spot by the fire made it pure magic. Two days and one night wasn’t enough. It was soul-soothing, restorative and unforgettable. ”

“ We were given a Canopy Camping voucher as a wedding gift and booked with Puriri Yurt. We had the absolute best experience. It was exactly what we needed—being away together in a quiet and serene property. We’d never stayed in a yurt before, but it was such a cool experience. The yurt had all the amenities we needed and more. They left us marshmallows and cookies to make s’mores, the fire was great, and we had some port to enjoy with it. The homemade bath salts were amazing, making us so relaxed in the outdoor bath tub. We drank our morning coffee on the swing atop the hill, with a beautiful outlook over the yurt. ”

“ Puriri Yurt was an incredibly relaxing environment. For anyone wanting a place of zen to unwind without distraction, this is the spot. We thoroughly enjoyed the facilities, the peace, and especially all the native birds that visit throughout the day. Everything was well set up, and we had zero complaints. It took us a bit to get used to the outdoor shower and compost toilet, but it didn’t take long, and in the end, we realised just how freeing the whole weekend was. We highly, highly recommend the stay to anyone seeking a short escape. ”
