Poplars Lane

Near Hastings, Hawke's Bay

Poplars Lane is 30 minutes from Hastings in the Hawke's Bay region and four hours from Wellington.

Elevated above farmland with native trees behind, the cabin looks out over the stunning Kaweka Ranges, with layered hills and poplar-lined farm lanes stretching into the distance. It's hard for words to fully capture the magic of this view.

Built from macrocarpa, gum, and Douglas fir sourced from the farm, the cabin features an open-plan layout. Kitchen, living, dining, and bedroom flow together in one warm space. It's cosy inside but perfectly equipped with everything you need for two. Wide ranch sliders open onto a large deck with two sunken outdoor baths, beautifully paired with a glass of your favourite drink. Set on a working farm, you may spot deer and rabbits wandering about, or hawks, kererū, and tūī overhead.

THINGS TO DO

Spend the afternoon playing Finska on the lawn, or unwind indoors with board games, cards, and a selection of books on local history, homesteads, and woolsheds. The real treat is the twin sunken outdoor baths on the deck, where you can soak, drink wine, and let the world melt away.

There are plenty of lush nature walks in the Hastings region to choose from - perfect for a day of adventuring, picnicking, and getting those steps in. Then end the day relaxing those tired muscles in a hot outdoor bath soak.

Drive a little further afield to Te Mata Peak in Havelock North, it's well worth the walk or bike ride for its stunning panoramic views. For something more leisurely, the riverside limestone bike tracks throughout Hawke's Bay are a lovely way to explore, and maps will be provided. A number of beautiful local bush walks are also nearby, with details in your welcome guide at the cabin.

Wine lovers will enjoy a tour of the Bridge Pa Triangle, one of New Zealand's premier wine regions, with world-class estates just a short drive away. Golf enthusiasts are also well catered for, with three courses within 25 minutes of the cabin.

On Sundays, the Farmers Market at the Hastings Showgrounds is a wonderful spot to pick up local produce and soak in the atmosphere. And for a truly memorable experience, a visit to Cape Kidnappers and its gannet colony is an absolute must.

Your hosts at Escape

YOUR HOSTS

Your hosts at Poplars Lane are Pip and daughter Georgia, along with husband Andrew and son Arthur, and of course the family dogs Milly and Fred.

The family has deep roots on Tuna Nui Station, with ties to the land stretching back to 1860. Andrew is a fifth-generation farmer who has worked the property his entire life, raising sheep and beef with the help of his family. Pip helps out on the farm alongside running other business ventures, Georgia works in the meat industry, and Arthur is currently seeing the world.

Poplars Lane was born from a desire to share the peace, beauty, and tranquillity of rural life with others. As the family sees it, not everyone gets the chance to experience dark skies, stunning views, and the simple luxury of nature, and they wanted to change that.
