Harakeke Hut

Waikawau, Coromandel

Harakeke Hut is situated on Coromandel Peninsula, just over 3-hour's drive from Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga, and 45 minutes from Coromandel Town.

Nestled within native New Zealand bush, the hut offers stunning views beyond the treetops of the ocean and Great Barrier Island. The only sounds you’ll hear during your stay are the birds and the wind rustling through the trees. The land is home to many native birds such as kereru, tūī, fantail, bellbird, and ruru, which can be spotted around the hut and along nearby bush tracks.

The expansive wooden deck is perfect for relaxing, with a sunshade sail offering cool shade on warmer days and string lights adding a magical touch in the evenings. Step through the French doors into a cosy bedroom, framed by sheer white curtains that flutter in the breeze. A kitchen is right next door, and an outdoor shower and loo are just metres away. Enjoy alfresco dining at the wooden table or relax in the bean bags after grilling up a storm on the BBQ under the stars.

Here, you’ll experience nothing but seclusion and serenity.

Your hosts at Escape

YOUR HOSTS

Your hosts at Harakeke Hut are Colleen and Stephen.

After years of searching, your hosts, Colleen and Stephen, finally discovered their 11-acre paradise. With vision and dedication, they've nurtured the scrub and regenerating bush and over the 20 years have planted thousands of native trees, guided by an ecologist's knowledge and supported by a local couple whose tireless efforts have helped transform the land.

The hut was the family’s first home on the 11-acre property for eight years until they expanded beyond living in this beloved little cabin and built further away, and Harakeke Hut became a getaway for their son. As he now lives in New York they wanted to share this special space with guests, expanding it beyond just family and friends.

The property's name, "Harakeke", comes from the Māori word for flax, reflecting the area's history. They've planted hundreds of flax plants along their 500-meter driveway to honour this heritage.

“ Harakeke Hut provided the ambience and retreat my partner and I desperately needed. The landscape and setting were nothing short of amazing, listening to the native birds, winds bustling through the native bush, and even hearing the crashing of waves from the coast below. We were blessed with prime weather, which made the experience so much more amazing. Colleen and Pat checked in with us prior to our stay and provided extremely helpful tips in their communications that really aided our safe travel through the evening – we can't thank them both enough for this. Check-in and check-out were seamless. We had ultimate privacy, which I especially enjoyed for sunbathing on the deck while reading a book from Colleen’s stunning collection. The hut provides space for us to reconnect with nature and the simple pleasures of life, which I think we all lose sight of as a consequence of our busy lives, especially in the city. The land will look after you if you do the same, and Harakeke Hut is one of those special places that truly lives up to this. I would recommend this stay for all – we will definitely be returning. Nei te mihi nui ki a koe Colleen, thank you so much. ”
